If you are searching for reasons to keep faith in the Republic going forward, it’s probably better to ignore the weird ramblings of Joe Biden, or the dazzling crudity of a Senator who wears short pants and a hoodie to work on the Senate floor. But these wonderments are symptomatic of something, and we are often encouraged by medical experts not to ignore the warning signs of disease.
The problem seems to be, for many of us, deciding who in government we should believe about anything. That’s true at every level, from Sisters to Salem to Washington DC. And it’s their own fault because, handed the public trust, they far too often abuse it. And without meaningful consequence--which is our fault because we can still, for the time being, vote.
Nevertheless, public cynicism is now inveterate, on both ends of the political spectrum. A good study for why that may be seems to exist in the investigation into Uncle Joe for allegedly peddling influence to foreign entities.
